Remember her from Match Game in the 70s? The equivalent of a future Sally Hayes(1) perhaps for a pre/young teen at the time, the age of most of this blog's team members back then.

[In 1981, the actress Elaine Joyce was working on a short-lived television series called Mr. Merlin when she received an interesting piece of mail. The widow of singer Bobby Van, Joyce was 36 at the time. The letter was from J. D. Salinger. “I was doing a series,” says Joyce, “and he wrote me a letter. I get fan mail all the time, but I was shocked. I really didn’t believe it. It was a letter of introduction to me about my work.” Joyce responded, just as Maynard had; and in this case, as well, a sustained correspondence followed. “It took me forever,” she says, “but I wrote back, and then we wrote to each other quite a bit.” As he had with Maynard, Salinger eventually arranged for the two of them to meet, and they began a relationship. The couple spent a lot of time in New York. “We were very, very private,” Joyce admits, “but you do what you do when you date -- you shop, you go to dinner, you go to the theater. It was just as he wanted it.” The only real suggestion the public had that the two were involved occurred in May 1982, when the press reported that Salinger showed up for an opening night at a dinner theater in Jacksonville, Florida, where Joyce was appearing in the play 6 Rms Riv Vu. But to conceal their affair, Joyce denied knowing him. “We were involved for a few years all the way through the middle eighties,” Joyce says. “You could say there was a romance.”]

My 14 year old niece was reading The Catcher in the Rye over Christmas. I borrowed it and read the whole thing over the course of a day, the third time I think I've read it. Very worthwhile re-reading as an adult. The book still resonates for whatever reason, perhaps because Salinger makes you both empathize for and partially identify with Holden Caulfield. The character feels so real. And he takes you on a journey that you don't want to end. It brings back all the angst and hopes and truths you knew at that certain point in your life when you still had time, lots of time...to figure it all out.

And Holden's sister Phoebe(2) is the greatest: sweet, resolute and pure, his savior...for the moment perhaps.

The book had its lousy goddam critics of course.

The book and the author remain a major influence on Wes Anderson. I thought Anderson's observation on Salinger's works as shared with Richard Brody(3) captured it best:

[Wes Anderson’s films, as their devotees know well, make wise and loving allusion to the works of J. D. Salinger. I heard from the director on the sad occasion of the writer’s death yesterday. He told me:
I remembered this passage from the F. Scott Fitzgerald story “The Freshest Boy”:
He had contributed to the events by which another boy was saved from the army of the bitter, the selfish, the neurasthenic and the unhappy. It isn’t given to us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world. He wakes up at ten o’clock on Sunday and calls Sally Hayes, an attractive girl whom he has dated in the past. They arrange to meet for a matinee showing of a Broadway play. He eats breakfast at a sandwich bar, where he converses with two nuns about Romeo and Juliet. He gives the nuns ten dollars. He tries to telephone Jane Gallagher, but her mother answers the phone, and he hangs up. He takes a cab to Central Park to look for his younger sister, Phoebe, but she isn’t there. He helps one of Phoebe’s schoolmates tighten her skate, and the girl tells him that Phoebe might be in the Museum of Natural History. Though he knows that Phoebe’s class wouldn’t be at the museum on a Sunday, he goes there anyway, but when he gets there he decides not to go in and instead takes a cab to the Biltmore Hotel to meet Sally.
Phoebe is particularly influential on Holden; her name denotes and derives from the Greek Phoibe—the Greek Titaness associated with the moon, suggesting she is oracle and catalyst for the boy who sees himself as the catcher in the rye at a cliff-side rye field where children play tag, whom he catches, and saves from themselves, when they stray too near the edge. This "catcher in the rye" is an analogy for Holden, who admires in kids attributes he struggles to find in adults, like innocence, kindness, spontaneity and generosity. Falling off the cliff could be a progression into the adult world that surrounds him and that he strongly criticizes. Later, Phoebe and Holden exchange roles as the "catcher" and the "fallen"; he gives her his hunting hat, the catcher's symbol, and becomes the fallen as Phoebe becomes the catcher.

New Orleans, LA - May 16, 2009 - The following is a statement from District "B" Councilmember Stacy Head:

"Well, here I am again. The center of attention because I am consistently "me." What have my emails - the "smoking gun" that those opponents of reform and progress have gloatingly teased the media and public with - shown? For starters, they have shown that I am the same person privately as I am publicly. I am as true to my conviction behind closed doors as I am in Council chambers. They have also shown, again, the bane of my existence, my outspoken character. No one needs to wonder what I am thinking. Am I embarrassed by the tone of some of my emails? Do I wish that I had been more cautious (and used spell check) before sending out some of them? OF COURSE! In fact, my humiliated mother has washed my mouth out with Tabasco for my crude description of Mr. Riley's "man parts." But, what I hope they have most shown is my non-wavering passion for New Orleans and the city that it is and can be. This is not the time to beat around the bush. This is a time for action. We are wasting the opportunity borne of great tragedy to restore New Orleans to a city that connects to its unique and extraordinary past and provides opportunities for prosperity for all.

My detractors' tired, old political antics have shown that there are a few people determined to tear our city apart in order to retain relevance and power. At the risk of pointing out the obvious, do they think we are idiots? The seeking of only 4 Councilmembers' emails and then cherry-picking mine was done for a reason. These opportunists attempt to change focus from the fact that we have FAR more in common than we have differences. Despite our race or ethnicity, we all want the same things - a safe city, affordable quality education for our children, decent housing, and a new direction for New Orleans. A recent poll confirmed it. But before that data confirmed it, my heart knew it. Most mothers want the same for their children. We are all connected. Success in one community brings success to all. Our common concerns led me to run for office and keep me working day and night for this city. I want a better city for my children. I want to grow old here with my friends and family.

So, I ask you, New Orleans, please join me in repairing some broken things in our wonderful city. We cannot do it without setting aside our old divisions and congregating around our common desires. Together let's stop tolerating corruption. Let's make sure our tax dollars are spent wisely to assure that we have decent streets and playgrounds from Gert Town to Algiers to the Ninth Ward. Let's make sure that we are business-friendly enough to grow opportunities so that every child in New Orleans has the chance to stay here and succeed. I firmly believe that this is what most of my constituents want.

Finally, these political games need to end. I am posting my emails (redacted for privilege, etc.) on my website, www.stacyhead.com, with private citizens' names and contact information redacted (they will be available no later than Monday, May 18, 2009). I will say it again, some of my language is not what I would want to hear from my children, but I am proud that I will have a record to show what their mother wanted for them, and all our children. A chance to live in the best city in the world for a lifetime.

"When I was a boy, the bestselling books were often the books that were on your piano teacher's shelf. I mean, Steinbeck, Hemingway, some Faulkner. Faulkner actually had, considering how hard he is to read and how drastic the experiments are, quite a middle-class readership. But certainly someone like Steinbeck was a bestseller as well as a Nobel Prize-winning author of high intent. You don't feel that now. I don't feel that we have the merger of serious and pop -- it's gone, dissolving. Tastes have coarsened. People read less, they're less comfortable with the written word. They're less comfortable with novels. They don't have a backward frame of reference that would enable them to appreciate things like irony and allusions. It's sad. It's momentarily uphill, I would say.

And who's to blame? Well, everything's to blame. Movies are to blame, for stealing a lot of the novel's thunder. Why read a novel when in two hours you can just go passively sit and be dazzled and amazed and terrified? Television is to blame, especially because it's come into the home. It's brought the fascination of the flickering image right into the house; like turning on a faucet, you can have it whenever you want. I was a movie addict, but you could only see so many movies in the course of a week. I still had a lot of time to read, and so did other people. But I think television would take all your day if you let it. Now we have these cultural developments on the Internet, and online, and the computer offering itself as a cultural tool, as a tool of distributing not just information but arts -- and who knows what inroads will be made there into the world of the book." - John Updike

Hi,
Wishing you all a joyful 2009. We are all well here on 1-2-09 at Temple Dr. Well, kinda well, my oldest son has Rob has spent the past 24 hours in bed w this flu thing, the wife is still fighting a bug now going on week 3....both are sick as a dog. These 2 members of the kelly clan unfortunately rung in the new year here at home sick in bed last night. But not I, alas, at the strong influence of my better half, I agreed to continue a 2 year tradition ....... faced w an invitation we had previously accepted , I took the road less traveled. An easy decision in light of my options, since we had already purchased 6 x14 $ apiece tickets for the Ocean City NJ, New Years Eve Party ($84) non refundable tix, I daringly alone proceeded w children # 2, 3, 4 to Longport, NJ to stay overnite at our friends Gina and Rich Giuliani and their 3 sons. We went to the OC boardwalk as planned for "The First Night" New Years activities. We once again anticipated the evening to be fun, filled with numerous choices of shows which were scheduled from 4-10 pm. Just as last year, the evenings schedule was finally selected by vote from the 6 kids during the afternoon adult cocktail hour.
After the drive over the inlet bridges, the afternoon from 4-5 pm started with a "True Barber Shop Quartet", which for some reason the kids all selected, they passed over an Elvis impersonator and a Barney The Dinosaur Show, we therefore attended "The C-Notes and Friends" a one hour show. 2 groups of 4 old men WWII era gents. They mesmerized us w their sounds and previously unheard of style of purely vocal music, all done while trying to hold in their upper dentures and burn off the 3 martinis they had recently consumed.....
Then we moved on down 6th street to the OCHS Auditorium to the "John Hadfield Show" in the HS gym. Scheduled for 5-6 pm. There was 9 of us, 6 kids and 3 adults. The guy was billed as a comic magician with a funny show, after opening w 2 stupid original songs about monkeys, he next performed the classic "beans beans are good for the heart", only it was the 4 minute version which none of us had ever heard of, and finally after introducing a cheesy talking battery powered robot parrot, the kids at minute 14 and in unison quickly and violently revolted, at once they all stood up and decided John Hadfield sucked (and he did), they were literally in the front row- center and totally blew this guy off w over 150 people seated behind them, we 3 adults were in the side stands and I almost died laughing as these 6 kids rejected this farce and walked out w obvious contempt for this lame buffoon on the stage, they noisily packed up their 6 hats, 6 coats and 12 gloves and left laughing at the stupidity of it, they were in charge of the evenings schedule and they knew it. Not surprisingly, the kids elicited a repressed response from about 20+ more people who also immediately packed up and began moving towards the exit after the kids revolt.
Next stop was a no brainer. The Schedule said "Free rides at the Wonderland Pier." Only the unpublished catch......just the sheltered kiddie rides were open, no roller coasters or big kid rides. So, we trekked the 2 blocks to wait 45 mins for the UFO Ride w real up down action and Frogger, it was awesome!!!
Next stop, "The Dave Smith Experience" this was no lie, a 9 block walk from 9th at Boardwalk to 5th past West. It was 21 degrees outside and there were 40 mile per hour gusts as we walked the distance and somehow missed every free Jitney by one half block. Needless to say, quite a rosy cheeked, numb toed adventure for our group. We finally arrived into the Primary school gym and settled down to thaw out and munch on the fudge and peanut brittle we scored at Bogle Bros Fudge Shop on the Boardwalk prior to our trek here. Dave Smith Experience was a hit. A 6'8 foot unicycle riding juggler-magician-comedian, the real deal, let me summarize, he ended with both legs, size 11 feet wrapped around behind his head, huge ass facing forward as he was playing guitar while he also walked around the stage on his hands w those humongous feet wrapped insanely behind his long neck. The song he closed w was "Bend Me, Shape Me, Anyway You Want Me".
But that's not all, the highlight is yet to come. Just 2 more blocks away at the Ocean City Coomunit Center the evenings highlight was chosen from 9-10 PM. Mr. Chad Juros, The 11th grade grade Stockton College Magician, survivor of juvenile cancer, and renowned creator of the "Pass The Magic" foundation for kids with cancer. We saw him last year, he was a totaly awesome performer according to what the gang remembered. Master Juros has also actually appeared with Chris Angel as well as on numerous regional morning talk shows, he is truly a charismatic young cancer surviving college aged magician and a real crowd pleaser.
We arrived late at 8:55 due to the inclement hike in the weather and Dave Smiths obscene encore performance. The COmm Center was packed, and as we walked down the hallway towards the back entry door, one of the kids said, "look, theres Chad Juros" and sure as shit, there he stood and waved his magical hands to all of us and said hello. Our eyes met briefly, I recognized young Master Chad from last year, I believed he also recognized me. Please be advised, that fine young gentleman took me for over $40 last New Years eve as the Kelly Clan drove back to Maple Glen w 2 of his "Kids For Cancer" autographed Chinese YoYos my wife recently threw out.
Well so be it, as our Irish luck always seems to have it, we looked about for a seat in the overcrowded theater. Master Chad then appeared from behind the stage cutain announcing a 10 Minute delay in the start of the performance. He also strongly insisted to the jam packed gymnasium that all of the 25 compacted rows of folding chairs occupied completely up front, must be moved back 30 feet to allow for the children and others to sit on the floor. This was bedrugingly done to the extent of about 15 feet, but just enough for the Giuliani/Kelly Clan to nab front row floor seats once again. Rich and Gina grabbed 2 seats near the back, however, I had a 3 foot pile of hats, coats and gloves and shoved them against the wall and grabbed an extremely soft, but on the floor, side view shot to the stage as I sat against the wall. The excitement mounted as Chad appeared on stage. He did a few quick tricks and then asked for a volunteer from the audience. He jumped down into the middle of the pack walking between the kids, Austin, Aidan, Grace, Richard, Anthony and John, he roamed about and my heart raced as I hoped he would select one of our kids for his show. To my dismay he turned away from the children and then headed towards the wall where I and numerous other kids sat in the corner, the children screamed and hooted for his attention.....my sphincter quickly and sickly tightened as our eyes once again met.....met frozen in contact, soul to soul........ and Chad Juros pointed at me and said "You will be my assistant". SHIT, I thought, NO FREUCKING WAY, I am not going to be Chad Juros assistant for the evening.....but as I thought this, my legs were somehow carrying me up the side stairs onto the stage with no escape and the sounds of cheers and hooting from the crowd. I was introduced to the crowd of over 300 people (this was THE showcase event of the evening). The new Duo Kelly & Juros proceeded to do a few amazing card and hat tricks and I was then given a key to the secret box that I would open at the end of the show. After receiving my cheers and adulation from the audience, I bowed and exited the stage, I found myself longing to once again return to my fans. I then exited the stage to allow a few pee-on shithead kids receive my spotlight for a minute or two. 10 minutes later , the evenings assistant "PAT" was re-invited back on stage for the Show Finale, I was the primary participant invited to engage in "The Greatest Chad Juros Magic Trick Of All Time". Known as " The Time Capsule".
I was summoned to present my key for the locked box on the stage. I was then asked to imagine my greatest New Years Eve Fantasy of all time, I went blank ???? huh? What would I say, there I stood being asked such a question in front of all of these strangers. Chad then presented me with a bean ball and told me to throw it into the crowd. As I aimed for my daughter, a mean boy next to her snatched the ball. Chad asked the boy, "What Year Will Pat Have his Greatest fantasy new years evening"? The dumb kid answered, " The Year 10,000" then Chad asked the kid to toss the ball in the air and next another kid grabbed it. Chad asked him, 'Where will Pats Greatest New years eve fantasy take place?" another dumb kid, the answer "Chucky Cheese", Same thing again the ball went up and another kid grabbed it and Chad asked the girl " Who will Pat be kissing on New years Eve In The Year 10,000 at Chucky Cheese?" The girl answered, " Minnie Mouse".....finally, the ball is thrown one more time and another real litle kid gets it and is asked: "What will be Pats New year Resolution in the year 10,000?" The kid answers: "Pat wants to make $2 in the year 10,000".........
Here I stand on stage as this stupid thing progresses........
Finally, I am asked to unlock the box and remove the "Time Capsule Tube" inside. I do as I am told, as the box opens I smell the freshness of that wonderful permanent magic marker scent wafting in the airspace, but see nothing out of the ordinary.....I cannot explain what happened next.

I opened the tube and infront of the 300+ audience along w Chad unfolded a very large piece of paper with the writing:

"Pats" Fantasy New Years Eve
Year: 10,000
Place: Chucky Cheese
Kissing: Minnie Mouse
Resolution: Earn $2.00

I did not see how he did this trick, looked pretty good to me!

Then we went home home to longport, NJ for the night and watched the kids laugh at Dick Clark stumble thru yet another New Years Eve countdown in NYC. Life is good in 2009!

And that is how I spent my New Years evening ~!

Kenneth, what is the frequency? Took the above image a couple of weekends ago at my mother-in-law's house with the D40. Replacing that 16 year old cathode ray tube with a used flat screen I bought and picked up from a colleague in Jersey City last Sunday morning - best time to travel in (and out of) New York City with gas back near $2. Took me twenty minutes door to door through the Holland Tunnel (I've waited in traffic an hour or more plenty of times just to inch up to the entrance to that thing). Sunday morning is clearly the optimal time.

Depression 'Precedent' Says Wait for the Rallies

Selling stocks after they reach new lows in a bear market is unwise because prices tend to rebound afterward, according to John Hussman, who manages the Hussman Strategic Growth and Total Return mutual funds.

"It is a typical market dynamic to have massive rallies toward prior levels of support" for shares in the midst of longer-lived declines, he wrote in his latest weekly report, published yesterday.

The CHART OF THE DAY -- similar to one in Hussman's commentary, entitled "The Stock Market Is Not in 'Uncharted Territory'" -- illustrates this tendency by showing how the Dow Jones Industrial Average fared during the Great Depression.

Four horizontal bars are included to designate where the Dow industrials hit bottom from November 1929 through October 1931. In each instance, the average later rebounded to the vicinity of its previous low.

"Only the final panic decline of a bear market offers investors virtually no chance to get out on rebounds," the report said. Even then the resulting losses are "recovered almost immediately in the subsequent bull market."

The Dow industrials dropped to their Depression-era low in July 1932. By the following May, the benchmark recouped all its declines from the last retreat.

"Recent market conditions seem like they have no precedent only because so many investment professionals know only the data they've lived through," Hussman wrote. "At this point, further declines in stock prices simply increase the long-term returns that investors can expect over time."

[That said, I'm selling on the next rebound.]
